It’s been a long summer holiday and we have lots of chess news to update you with. As all avid chess followers will know, the 106th British Chess Championships was held on 26th July to 4th August. This year it was held in the lovely seaside resort of Torquay, the British Rivera. A large number of Bristol Juniors made their journey south hoping for some sun, sea and of course some top quality chess.

Mums preparing for 107th British Chess Championships, Torquay 2020.

The venue, Riviera International Centre, provided great playing conditions with 2 large playing halls, large room/restaurant for parents and a pleasant commentary room.  There were also great facilities close by including an onsite wave pool, tennis courts and a Pitch ‘n Putt course.  The organisers also provided a very entertaining social programme with movie nights, Pitch ‘n Putt, boat trips, costal walks and a simultaneous with IM Jack Rudd.  Our juniors and their parents had no excuses to be bored.

Bristol Juniors participating included Matthew, Kandara, Toby, Aron, Chirag, Jack and Oli, and they were supported by an equally large number of senior players and parents.

There were some outstanding games and results from our juniors.

Some highlights and results below:

·       Kandara played in both U12s and U1750 sections, a tough gig having to play both morning and afternoon.  She did great in both sections scoring 50% in the U12s with 4.5/9 and only lost one game in the U1750s finishing on 3/5.  A fine performance for Kandara.

·       Toby perform well in the U14s and was challenging for 3rd in the final round, only to falter at the end.  He had some tough games including a marathon against top seed Aaravamudhan Balaji. Toby also had decent performances in the Blitz and Rapidplay tournaments, finishing on 5.5/9 in both.

·       Aron was playing in his first British Championships and was also in the very tough U14s section. Like Toby, one of his games was against a top seed, Jacob Yoon, a game which Aron took his opponent right to the end.  Although a tough tournament, Aron thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  With this experience under his belt, I’m sure it will help improve his game further, his opponents’ better watch out.

·       Whilst Oli did not perform as he would have wanted in the U2050 section, but he made up for it with a good Rapidplay and Blitz tournament finishing with 5 and 5.5 out of 9 respectively.

·       Chirag wasn’t quite on form during the in the Major Open but managed a good win against Chris Rice a 2040 and in Blitz tournament managed a superb 6 out of 9 including a very good win against 5th seed, 2010 rated Robert Starley.
