Bristol had a disappointing weekend at Kenilworth, failing to capitalise on the good start made in the first two rounds. The first team lost both matches, against the sort of opposition they need to beat if they are to stay in Division 1. Simon Ansell had an up and down time; after a good win against Luke McShane on Saturday, he blundered away a piece and lost in just 13 moves on Sunday.
The second team came away with just one point, though it should really have been three against very tough opposition. Trailing 4-2 to Invicta Knights 2nds on Saturday, both the remaining games looked won. Steve Dilleigh had a rook, bishop and pawns against rook and pawns and gradually nudged through to victory (in fact, the very last game of all to finish after nearly seven hours). John Richards, after being a pawn down, had fought back to reach a won knight and pawns v pawns ending. He then watched in horror as he realised he had miscalculated and the opponent's king was going to catch his last pawn. This game, too, was a long one, going well into the seventh hour.
On Sunday, Bristol 2 came up against a very strong Guildford 2 side. This time, we managed to draw 4-4, after Alex Easton had to agree a draw in rook and pawn ending. It could, though, have been a victory for Bristol: Jack Rudd was material up with loads of time and his opponent in time trouble. Jack made the error of trying to blitz his opponent and threw away his advantage.
Team Manager Fred Appleton had a hard time getting teams out for this weekend. Four people (Tyson Mordue, Simon and David Buckley, and Jerry Humphreys) decided they would prefer to play in the Spectrum Congress at Clevedon. Chris Jones was selected and had to drop out at the last moment for family reasons, and Charles Cobb failed to wake up in time for the Sunday game!
