Heavily outgraded in all four matches, getting just one point may seem to be quite good in retrospect. In fact, Bristol had chances in all the matches, but the breaks did not go our way.

Robert McFarland should have won but blundered, and had to bail out with a perpetual. At 4-2 down, Chris Beaumont and David Moskovic both tried manfully to save a point but had to agree draws in the end.

Sophie Tidman went straight for the throat as usual, and this time came unstuck. Simon Buckley had the better of things but had to settle for a draw in the end. Craig Hanley managed a draw on his Bristol debut, but David Hodge's first outing was less successful as he was ground down by Graham Lee.
Sunday, Round 6
Bristol 1 Home House 1 b S Ansell 2400 0-1 J Hodgson 2565 2 w G Buckley 2285 0-1 D Norwood 2535 3 b C Beaumont 2298 =.= J Gallagher 2519 4 w C Cobb 2275 0-1 M Hennigan 2430 5 b R McFarland 2257 =.= A Mortazavi 2380 6 w D Collier 2245 0-1 R Tozer 2305 7 b D Moskovic 2248 0-1 D Hassabis 2176 8 w M Buckley 2055 1-0 R Hennigan 2215 2-6A disappointing result from a match that started well. Outgraded once again, we were delighted to get early draws on two of our 'black' boards: namely, Robert McFarland and Chris Beaumont. Melanie Buckley had a stunning victory over Rita Hennigan, while Graeme Buckley had a good position against David Norwood. But the GM kept wriggling, fought his way back and Graeme's position collapsed. David Moskovic was the last to finish, in a game where there seemed more chat over the board than action on it.
Bristol 2 Witney & Swindon 1 w N Jakubovics 2210 =.= A Hunt 2297 2 b D Hodge 2120 0-1 M Devereaux 2290 3 w A Easton 2160 =.= T Headlong 2270 4 b S Buckley 2144 1-0 R Haydon 2200 5 w C Hanley 2110 1-0 D Hackett 2220 6 b D Grossett 2048 0-1 M Rose 2130 7 w S Dilleigh 2055 0-1 R Churm 2147 8 b S Tidman 1752 1-0 L Smith 1616 4-4There's always a good dose of friendly rivalry in Bristol v Witney matches because Witney was formed by a group of ex-Bristol players. This was the first time that Witney had faced the Bristol second team and so it was pleasant to take a match point off the "Witney Houstons" when the ratings were so much in their favour. Stars of the show were Simon Buckley (who wanted to know why the opposition were called the Witney Houstons - can I really be that old?), Sophie Tidman - who quietly demolished Lucy Smith - and Craig Hanley - who completed a good weekend for himself while showing great patience in winning the last game to finish.
Of the two Bristol debutants in the second team - Hodge and Hanley - Craig Hanley had much the better weekend, clocking up a point and a half. David Hodge failed to score, but he did face some very tough opposition - his time will come.
Bristol 1 has started sliding towards the relegation zone, but there are plenty of other teams there with us; things should get clearer after the next weekend. It cannot be denied that we missed Karl Mah (who was busy with course work) which meant that others all had to move up. Robert McFarland proved a good replacement, drawing both his games.
Bristol 2 were disappointed to lose their 100% record, but it was to a very strong Wood Green side. Witney were also strong on paper, and a draw against them was a very good result.
