place by scoring 3½/5 at the Suffolk Open in June.

Melanie, who will celebrate her sixteenth birthday during the Championships, was delighted to gain the place and is looking forward to taking on the country's best players. The Championship, sponsored by Smith & Williamson, will feature Nigel Short and Matthew Sadler as the top seeds. Hanham's Chris Beaumont will also be there, having qualified at the WECU Championships. Unfortunately, Melanie's younger brother, Simon, has not qualified this year, though he has come very close on four occasions. Simon will be making a last attempt to qualify in the Manchester Congress in early July.
