On May 7th to 9th the Tenth Frome Chess Congress was held at
Selwood Middle School. 195 players entered and winners were:
Open :-
D. Gormally (Coulsdon & Purley) on 4.5 out of 5 ahead
of Simon Buckley (Keynsham), A. Ledger (Bedford)
and C. Tippleston (Northampton) all on 4. S. Buckley qualified
for the 1999 British Championships on tie-break from C. Tippleston..
The Under 170 grading prize was won by I. White (Gloucester)
and F. Van Randen of Hillegom on 3 points.
Major (U155):-
T. Nitz and L. Cheung (both Bath University) on 4.5/5 ahead
of R. Warmerdam (Hillegom) and A. Bamford (Wells)
on 4. The Under 135 grading prize was won by D. Flynn (Gosport
& Botley) on 4 points.
Intermediate (U125):-
D. Macarthur (Keynsham) on 4.5/5 ahead of Alexandra Kelly
(Surrey) and C. Woolcock (Barry) on 4/5. The Under 114
grading prize was won by P. Brown (Chard & Ilminster)
on 3.5 points.
Minor (U100):-
J. Whitfield (South Hams), Rachael Wilkinson (Churchill
School) and P. Allaway (South Bristol) all on 4.5/5. M. J.
Cuggy (Brixham) and H. Saunders (Monmouth) won the
Under 80 grading prize with 3 points.
Somerset trophies were won by: Simon Buckley in the Open
(Somerset Champion/ Denys Bonner Trophy),
T. Nitz in the Major (Leon York Memorial Trophy), D. Macarthur
in the Intermediate (Roy Hossell Trophy) and Rachael Wilkinson
in the Minor (Cyril Chapman and J. Mackereth Trophies for
the highest placed Somerset player and highest placed ungraded
Somerset player respectively).
Rachael Wilkinson also won the Cuprinol Junior Trophy (Highest
scoring West of England Junior in any section). Keynsham and
Hillegom 2 won the team competition.
Round 1
IMs Danny Gormally and Simon Williams threw away an early half
point when they got stuck in heavy traffic and had to take byes.
Peter Chaplin and Nick Frost who were due to play them were paired
together instead, and had an exciting game until Peter Chaplin
blundered a rook.
Round 2.
All top seeds won.
Round 3
David Ledger took the sole lead with a win over Simon Buckley,
although he was at a pawn disadvantage for part of the game.
Top seed Andrew Ledger was held to a draw by R. Bryant (Oswestry)
in a long drawn-out battle.
Round 4
Danny Gormally won the top board clash with David Ledger with
the following game.

Brother Andrew Ledger was held to another draw, this time by C.
Tipplestone (Northampton), leaving Danny Gormally and Simon Williams
as joint leaders on 3.5/4
Round 5
Behind Gormally and Williams were nine players on 3 out of 4,
six of which were interested in the British Championship.
Danny Gormally beat Simon Williams with a French Defence to take
outright first place on 4.5/5.
Local teenager Simon Buckley (14) took the British Championship place and Somerset trophy with a fine sacrificial attack against one of the visiting Dutchmen, Jan Bakker. . Andrew Ledger beat Adrian Jackson with a late mating attack, and Charles Tippleston beat David
Ledger. Simon's brother, David Buckley held Stephen Ledger to
a draw with only a rook and pawn each at the end.
