A large contingent of Bristol players had a great time at the remote setting of the Cliff Hotel, Gwbert.
In the Open, Dave Osborne (Grendel) and John Richards (Horfield) both had good results, finishing in tie fourth on 3½ points out of five. John took the grading prize as he had the lower rating. James Knowles (Grendel) scored two.
The Major saw Brian Crewe (Horfield) playing out of his skin as he raced to 4/4; sole leader going into the final round. Sadly, he lost and had to settle for a share of second place. Ian Biddick (Hanham), Richard Allen (Clifton) and Steve Boniface (Grendel) were close behind with 3½. Howard Millbank (Horfield) got 3 points.
Arthur Hibbitt (Grendel) got 3½ in the Minor and Peter Jones (Clifton) scored 2½.
The Gwbert Congress used to be a carefully guarded secret as far as English players were concerned. Now it's a regular trip for a fair-sized contingent of Bristol players. The one gripe this year was the cramped playing conditions - perhaps they will limit numbers next year, get your entry in early!
