Sunday Chess in Bath Join us this coming Sunday for a game of chess in the sun ! Next date will be 4th July Please feel free to join in The street chess session went very well on Sunday, with loads of players about and twelve taking part in an all-play-all blitz tournament. The tournament had a very strong top end, with Chris Dorrington(217), Peter Poobalisingam(197), James Jackson(194), Jerry Humphreys(175) and a visitor from Norfolk county chess - Brian Jeffery(162) making up the top end. Several visitors to Bath also stopped to take part in competition and a friendly, if frantic(!), event ensued. The play went quickly with the trials of organising an all-play-all, without much planning, being overcome by everyone helping to sort out the pairings. Visitors to Bath were entertained for two hours as the blitz action kept the players busy, with all eleven rounds being played without a drop of rain! Meanwhile, the giant board saw plenty of use by locals and tourists alike, with occasional amusing interuptions from the Natural Theatre company, part of the city's fringe festival which is on at the moment. Chris Dorrington won the proceedings outright, with an unassailable 11/11 - a typical solid performance from Chris. Tom Thorpe also deserves a mention for getting a very worthy 7/11, clearly a player to watch out for in tourament play. Many thanks to all those who took part. The next Sunday chess session is on Sunday June 20, 2-5pm. bath street blitz results.xls Held outside Bath Abbey on 6th June 2010
The University of Bath chess club is pleased to announce that open public chess sessions will be held in Bath city centre, fortnightly throughout June, July and August. These sessions will take place on the following Sundays, between 2 and 5pm: July 4th and 18th and August 1st and 15th. The sessions will be held outside Bath Abbey in the square between the tourist office and the Roman Baths. What better setting to come along, sit in the sun and eat an icecream over a game. It is hoped that a large or even giant chess set will be available to make the event an interesting spectacle for the public and any who wish to take part. Several normal sized boards will also be available, with clocks, for a fun, friendly session of afternoon chess. For any questions or queries, please contact Chris Lamming C.P.G.Lamming@bath.ac.uk or 07833 680723 - hope to see you there! |
