Report - John Stubbs

The Chipping Sodbury Rapidplay on Saturday October 28th was a well attended event with 51 entrants playing across three sections.

It was really encouraging to see so many Bristol league players in attendance, as well as several new players, and others coming as far as such places as Trowbridge, Swindon, Cardiff, Hereford, Reading, Birmingham and East Budleigh !

In the OPEN SECTION the winner was Remi Tallieux from Reading with a fantastic unbeaten score of 5.5/6
Remi has not played competitive chess for quite a few years now, and was a last minute entry on the day.
It soon became clear that Remi had certainly not forgotten how to play chess ! The only player to even take 1/2 point of him was top seed Attila Reznak (227).

In the MAJOR SECTION the winner was Oiver Stubbs with an unbeaten score of 5/6. This is Oliver's first win in a Major section. This section was very competitive with many experienced stalwarts of the Bristol league taking part. However, what was surprising was that the first three places were all taken up by Bristol league junior players. An excellent achievement for the young guns !

In the MINOR SECTION there was a three way split for first place.  Toby Kan, Yuvraj Kumar and John Skeen all finished on a winning score of 5/6.. Again, (not so surprising now) these three are also all Bristol league junior players !
This just shows the strength of The Bristol league juniors, and clearly they are already accomplished chess players.. And believe me there are many others waiting in the wings.. They are all just getting better and better, and I think it is now time for a Bristol Juniors Chess Championship.. Watch this space !

I would also like to send sincere thanks to the following who have supported me so generously in this event, they are:
Geoff Gammon, Dave Tipper, Tim Jones, Michael Harris, David Kan, Richard Livermore, and Graham Mill-Wilson

Also, last but certainly not least, to Taniya and Anjula for their lovely catering on the day of wonderful homemade goodies !

The next Chipping Sodbury Rapidplay will be In April 2018, hope to see you all there again. This time on a Sunday, so hopefully parking a bit better.. Details to follow.
