4NCL: Bristol's strongest side, but no points

Rounds 5-6, 24-25 January 1998

The following results and tables have been extracted from the wealth of information on the 4NCL web site.

Division 1

Bristol 1 v BCM

Bristol fielded probably its strongest ever side, with the top seven boards all 2300 or over. However, the top boards (and two GMs) of the BCM team proved too strong and stopped Bristol taking any points from the one match they had any hope of winning this weekend (Slough being Sunday's opponents).

Bristol 1 v Slough

Just what you don't need when things are not going well is to play a team like Slough, even if they were missing some of their stars. In the circumstances, to lose by just 5-3 is some achievement. Melanie Buckley was as solid as ever and is a real asset to the team; so far this season she has drawn five and lost just one, nearly all her opponents having a higher grade.

Division 2

Bristol 2 v White Rose

Jo Alston failed to appear which meant Bristol 2 started 1-0 down against the division leaders. A good draw by David Collier on top board, and two wins from the Horfield pair on 6 and 7, made Bristol the first team to take a match point off White Rose.

Unfortunately, the match was marred by an incident on board 6. Alex Easton was a pawn up against White Rose's Richard Palliser, but in his usual time trouble. On reaching move 41 Alex enquired whether the time control had been reached. He believed Palliser indicated it had been, so he wandered off for a smoke. Then he found out that Palliser was claiming Alex had offered a draw, which he had now accepted. A long dispute followed, with the arbiter and both team managers getting involved. The best interpretation is that Palliser misunderstood Alex's Scottish accent. But, as Alex pointed out, "Do they think I would be fool enough to offer a draw in this position? Especially when the team needed me to win?" Judge for yourselves. Alex Easton

White has just played 41.Ke2 and is a clear pawn up. After the arbiter ordered the game should be played on, it lasted just a few moves.

Bristol 2 v Witney & Swindon

Sophie Tidman joined the team at short notice to give Bristol 2 a full side in the local derby. Then Fenella Headlong offered a very early draw; perhaps she didn't realise she outgraded her young opponent by 30 points! Unfortunately, things got worse after that and the team were defeated by 4½-3½.
