Report on Somerset Junior Championships at Millfield School 27th Nov 2005

Today saw the 3rd Grand Prix of this season

Well, Millfield has ended and the third Somerset Grand Prix and London Junior qualifier, was full of surprises. The least surprise being that I messed up the start (again). Many thanks must go to Matthew Turner (and Mum and Dad) for a good day.

In the Under 8s, there was a great win for Oliver in only his second tournament. Zoë and Thomas also had a good day as both qualified for the London Junior Congress.

The Under 10s was the largest section and many games went to the wire. Yein and James fought a hard draw on the top board to give the older player the overall title. James was top Under 9.

The Under 12 section had many fine players, including the super-strong Sharan Soni. He won a men’s tournament recently in Halifax, so you can gauge the strength of this section. However, he did not get his own way in the end and Oliver played fantastically well to earn a draw in the final round. Ten children qualified for London in this section, with Matt playing the best of his life to grab 2nd spot and only losing to Sharan in round 4.
