The Eight Board League Knockout was won by Clifton 5 - 3 at the Polish Club on Wednesday 4th May.

Bath arrived at the polish club last night short of key players notably Jim Sherwin & Andrew Gregory, and without the services of James Jackson & Chris Dorrington from Bath University so had to perform well against another strong Clifton line up.

The early signs were not good as Peter Dimond looked in deep trouble on board 7 and Peter Poobalasingam went the exchange down and eventually lost on board 1.

David Buckley played a solid game and managed to notch up the first win for Bath on board 2 and together with a handy draw on board 8 all was not lost.

The final four boards entered into time trouble and saw John Curtis go a piece down and seemingly destined to lose until he swindled his way into a bishops of opposite colour ending.  Duncan Grossett held the initiative and held the advantage right up until Ben found some neat moves for his knight with some excellent endgame play.  Dominic Bennett had what appeared to be a drawn position until the final few seconds proved costly for his opponent ( Rxf7 in my annotations would have been a safer route to a draw ).  Dave Collier's game proved to be the key game as a win here for Bath would have given them the trophy on board count.  Dave escaped the complications with a huge slice of luck ! ( see h6!! in my annotations )  and mobilised his Rook just in the nick of time to force a win.

Well done to Clifton,                   Dave Tipper
