4NCL 1997/8: Bristol's Great Escape

Rounds 9-11, 23-25 May 1998

The final 4NCL weekend of the 1997-98 season saw both Bristol teams in a precarious position. The first team lay in 11th place out of 12, with three teams due for relegation, while the second team was in 9th place in the second division - no relegation this time, but the bottom three teams would have to apply for reelection next season.

So, desperate times. But the first team did have a surprisingly good chance of pulling clear. We were due to play Northumbria (10th place) and South Wales Dragons (12th) in the final two matches. Our first match was against Invicta Knights - which we would almost certainly lose - but two wins in the other matches would give us a chance of survival. However, Guildford, who we needed to overtake, had turned up with a surprise weapon, GM Danny King.

The second division position also looked pretty dire. We had four matches to play, and it looked like we could lose all four. Our last three opponents, Simpsons, Barbican 2, and Coulsdon, had all started the season with weak teams; especially Coulsdon, who were bottom of the table. But they all turned up in Birmingham with very strong sides.

Saturday - Round 9

The first team were heavily outgraded by an Invicta Knights team, who were second in the table. Any points at all would be a bonus and we managed 1½; a fine win by Jack Rudd against Ivanov (2440) and an excellent draw by David Collier with Andrew Ledger (2460).

We could have done without Guildford winning. The bottom of the table now looked like this, with just two matches to go:

Meanwhile, the second team were floundering against Gwent Dragons, the one match we thought we had good chances of winning. I threw away a win after saccing a bishop for an attack; my opponent consolidated and I had to resign after (just) reaching the time control. Meanwhile, we had a little luck on the next board when Duncan Grossett won on time. Alex Easton tried like mad to win with a queen against two rooks but had to concede a draw, leaving us 3-4 down.

The only game still going in the whole room was 14 year old Sophie Tidman, playing Gwent's 13 year old Ann Powell. Sophie had bishop and three pawns against knight and two, but it was a very difficult ending. The strong players in the room could not agree whether it was won or drawn, but Sophie kept plugging away and probing. Eventually, she decided on bringing her king round from the king side and down the centre. Sophie forced the win of the knight and, after a total of six and a half hours play, Ann resigned. The spectators were so impressed with both players' guts, stamina and application that, a rare event at chess matches, they broke into spontaneous applause.

Sunday Morning

The following morning, Bristol 2 had to face a strong Simpsons side; so strong that they were stronger than Bristol 1's opponents for the afternoon, Northumbria. Simpson's were still smarting from a surprise defeat the previous round by Witney, so could be expected to go for it. I switched Simon Buckley to board one because he fancied a go at GM David Norwood, leaving Alex Easton to face a 'mere IM', Michael Hennigan on board two. Simpsons also had IMs on boards three, four and five, and a WIM on six. I said they were strong!

They were also ripe for another giant killing! At one point, it looked like David Buckley had a big plus against Mortazavi, and newcomer Ed Player was playing well against Tozer. Duncan Grossett was beating Rita Hennigan and Sophie Tidman stood well in her game, despite some rather boorish behavior by her opponent.

Martyn Sellars had a fine win in just 19 moves to take us into a lead. Just when we were getting very hopeful it all fell apart. David lost, and then Ed fell to a back rank mate in a time scramble. Sophie's position drifted to a draw in time trouble. Duncan brought in a point, but we lost on the top four. Steve Dilleigh did well to draw against Bob Wade, but the final result was a defeat by 5-3.

Sunday Afternoon

Sunday afternoon saw Bristol first team go into battle with Northumbria, knowing that nothing less than victory would do. Jack Rudd drew early, but then Graham Copeland lost, making things look bleak. Good wins by Ansell and Baker turned things round, and soon we were 3-2 up. A draw from Charles Cobb, playing an important match in the middle of exams, kept things moving our way. Finally, David Collier won and Melanie Buckley then took a draw to make it a 5-3 vital victory.

Other scores: North West Eagles 1-7 Wood Green; Barbican 1 7½-½ South Wales Dragons; Invicta Knights 1 5½-2½ Richmond; Slough 6-2 Guildford 1; B.C.M. 3½-4½ Midland Monarchs.

A side effect of Chris Baker's victory was that he finally achieved a FIDE rating of 2400, which should result in him getting the IM title he has waited for for so long. Unfortunately, it also meant he could not play on the final day in case he lost crucial rating points.

The second team took on the division leaders, Barbican 2. They had an amazing afternoon, with fine wins by Simon Buckley and, yet again, Sophie Tidman, resulting in a 4-4 draw. Sophie, who has a BCF grade of just 122, was playing superbly, and made her win against a player with a FIDE rating of 2050 look easy.

Bristol 2 now looked doomed. In the final round we had to play Coulsdon. Coulsdon had been bottom of the table, but they had turned for the final weekend with a very strong side and had won all three matches fairly comfortably.

Monday - The Final Round

Going into the final day, I had a difficult problem. I had no Baker, nor Copeland or Cobb, which meant I had to bring players up from the second team for the crucial last match with South Wales Dragons. I decided to play Simon Buckley, Alex Easton and Ed Player. Unfortunately, with our weakened team, South Wales Dragons would be stronger than us on paper.

Then, just after I'd gone to bed at midnight there was a knock on the door. Martyn Sellars had brought a message from Reception, saying that Andrew Cooper's car had broken down and he could not make it for the next day. This was a disaster - I was already playing myself, so there were no reserves. Bristol 2 would have to play the very strong Coulsdon with only seven players.

During an unsettled night's sleep, I decided I had one last thing to try. Graeme Buckley had already turned me down once because he was busy trying to finish a book. But he did live nearby in Wolverhampton and perhaps he would consent to play just one game. I phoned him at 9:10 on Monday morning, from a phone in the hotel lounge. Yes!!!! Graeme agreed to come down for the game and play on board three for the first team. This strengthend the whole side and I now had a full second team as well. Little did I know what drama Graeme would bring to the final match.

At the team meeting at 10:30, I gave the squad the bad news first about Andrew Cooper, and then told them the good news! I pointed out that there were all sorts of mathematical calculations about who would go down, but we should ignore them; our sole concern had be to win the match.

The first team came out fighting. Early wins from Alex Easton and Jack Rudd made it look like we were going to do it.

Just when everything looked like it was going well, Chris Beaumont lost on time. It then became the most tense match I have ever been involved in. The 4NCL Web site report describes it well: "This might have been a relegation struggle, but to judge from the number of spectators, it was the match of the round! Bristol went two up but then John Cooper's fine win put the Dragons back in the hunt and spectators were spellbound by the do-or-die battles in progress on boards 3 and 4. Dyce-Buckley went to 138 moves(!) but the Bristol player's amazing effort to get the point despite horrific time trouble just failed to materialise. This left Dave Collier fighting to stave off what looked like a likely defeat against Charles Morris and get Bristol the vital two points they needed to draw level with Guildford on match points. Despite having to give up a piece he displayed incredible brinkmanship to hold on for a draw at which our attention turned to the last game to finish in the Guildford-BCM match ..."

In fact, Graeme Buckley's time trouble was so bad that he played 61 moves in his last five minutes! When Graeme took the half point, David's position looked dire:

The reason for moving to the Guildford match was that Bristol and Guildford were now level on match points. Guildford were 6-1 down to B.C.M., but if they won the last game, they would stay up as they would have half a game point more than Bristol. A draw would see Guildford relegated as, although level with Bristol on both match and game points, they had lost to Bristol by 5-3 earlier in the season. As Jack Rudd pointed out, it was a good job we had not won by just 4½-3½, as we would then not tie on game points.

Guildford were hopeful as Richard Webb had good winning chances against Tim Wall, but then (as the Web site reported):

"... suddenly Richard's advantage had begun to fade. Finally it came down to R+K v N+K. He tried for a while (during which his opponent's face was a picture of dejection - or was it battle fatigue?), then looked up in despair at his colleagues. They shrugged their shoulders. Richard finally accepted the inevitable and agreed a draw. Guildford and Bristol were dead level on both match and game points; but the next tie break to apply was the result of their individual match earlier in the season. Bristol had won it 5-3, so Guildford were relegated and Bristol lived to fight again. Anyone who thinks watching chess matches is boring should have been there between 4pm and 6pm - it was riveting!"

So riveting in fact that I could not watch and retreated to the bar. I had been the last one to finish in the second team match; which turned out to be one of the biggest upsets of the season. Once again, Duncan Grossett and Sophie Tidman turned in star performances.

The 4NCL Web site reported: "Like first team, like second team - Bristol teams really know how to turn a chess match into melodrama. All we need is Andrew Lloyd-Webber writing the music and we'd have a hit musical on our hands (damn, just remembered, it's already been done, hasn't it?). This was another desperate, skin-of-the-teeth effort, and this time a face-to-face battle between the two interested parties. Bristol had to win by 5-3; 4½-3½ wouldn't have been good enough. In the end, despite outgrading their opponents comfortably, Coulsdon found that their final weekend campaign to escape the ignominy of having to seek re-election had all been in vain. Appropriately it was left to Bristol manager John Richards to offer the draw that kept his team's guaranteed place in the 4NCL. Well done, Houdini, and commiserations to Coulsdon & Purley."

Other results: Guildford 2 1-7 Witney & Swindon; Nidum Knights 3½-4½ White Rose; Kings Head 4-4 Invicta Knights 2; Simpsons 6-2 Gwent Dragons; Barbican 2 3-5 Wessex.
